Wu hadn’t been paying close enough attention to Grady while they spoke. She hadn’t noticed that one of his hands had slipped below the level of the table. She assumed he’d be wearing a shoulder holster like her, forgetting that every time she’d seen that stupid luger before, it had been in his belt.

He fired twice now under the table. The first bullet smacked harmlessly into the seat beside her, the second went through her leg, just below the knee. Wu yelped in pain and surprise. She dropped back down into her seat and drew her own gun to return fire. Too slow. Before she could take aim, Grady had sprung away from his seat and pulled his gun up to level at her.

“I would say that I didn’t want to have to do this,” he said, chuckling, “but we both know that would be a lie.”

He fired again. Wu, lacking any other options, dropped to the ground and rolled under the table for cover. Grady’s bullets smacked into the tabletop. A few made it through. Wu kept rolling away from where she’d been sitting. She saw holes appearing above and around her. She reached the other side of the table and stuck her hand out, firing blind at where she guessed he would be. She heard him laugh, adjusted her aim, and fired again. A return shot hit the seat beside her, kicking up a small spray of stuffing. She waited, listening. In a moment she heard what she’d been expecting, the solid metal clack of the clip being removed from the luger. Stupid old-fashioned guns.

Wu took the opportunity to pull herself out from under the table. She didn’t bother trying to shoot at Grady. She knew she’d likely never hit him. Instead, she sprinted across the room to the door. It slid open as she approached and she collided with a member of the club’s staff who had opened it from the other side. Presumably the young woman had heard some sound of disturbance from within the room and had come to find out what was going on. Wu tackled her down to the ground and pulled her away from the door just as more of Grady’s bullets struck the ground where they’d been standing.

“Get security,” Wu told the girl, shoving her up to her feet. “Now! Run!”

Pulling herself upright with some effort, Wu limped over to the balcony railing and leaned against it. Her left leg was in agony. She’d managed to put it out of her mind while running across the room through sheer adrenaline but now she was in tremendous amounts of pain. Looking down, she saw blood splattered on both the front and back of her jeans, which meant the bullet had gone right though. She could still move the leg in question, which was good, and even put some weight on it, but she knew that if she didn’t get something around the wounds soon, she was likely going to bleed out.

It pained Wu to think just how effectively Grady had played her.
